Born in Genoa in 1950, Francesco Musante qualified initially at the city’s artistic secondary school and then went on to study at the Genoa branch of the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti of Turin. In the Seventies, in the full swing of the student
revolts, he decided to enrol at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Genoa and to attend the painting courses at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Carrara.
His first artistic experiments date to 1967, consisting largely of abstract researches on large colour fields. The following year he began to display his works in collective shows, and in painting competitions. The works of the years 1969-1970 reveal the influence of Pop Art and of Rauschenberg’s Combine Paintings: the references to America are made clear by the use of legends and the insertion of objects and pieces of wood. From 1971 on, he decided to become a full-time artist. Working as a painter,
sculptor and potter, in 1973 he made his debut with a collective and a one-man show held in the Galleria II Quadrifoglio of La Spezia, where he moved after his marriage to Sandra. This was an important year that marked the start of his long and successful artistic career, also as an engraver. In fact, from 1983 on he also appeared in the catalogues of “Original
nineteenth-century and modern Italian and Foreign engravings” published by the antique bookshop of Dino and Paolo Prandi.

Up to the mid-Seventies, Musante frequented Turin and in particular the Galleria Sperone; he got to know several artists from the Arte Povera movement, including Penone who was teaching at the artistic secondary school of Genoa at the time.
1975 witnessed a shift of direction: Musante began to devote himself to figurative painting, initially creating a series of female figures inspired by Klee and the Vienna Secession. It was a theme which was to continue to unfurl over ten years, utilising the
most diverse techniques – from watercolour to oil, collage and engraving – as well as a variety of supports including canvas, wood, ceramics, plate and paper. These works were then displayed at a series of exhibitions in Rome, Genoa, La Spezia,
Milan and Odessa (USSR). This was also the period in which the cycle connected with the reading of the “Spoon River Anthology” and Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” emerged, the latter inspiring him to create the comic- strip published in the “Imagocritica” magazine in 1980. Gradually the graphics and watercolour work emerged, where we can discern the
first narrative and fantastic trends that were to characterise his work from 1985 up to the present: the first “omini” or little men appeared, looking as if they had jumped out a book of fairy tales, inserted into contexts full of objects, figures and words.
Finally his paintings left the “dramatic” atmospheres behind them and became lightened, possibly as a consequence of his decision, taken in 1988, to live and work in the mediaeval village of Vezzano Ligure (La Spezia). In 1984 he taught the techniques of artistic engraving on a professional course run by the European Community. In 1987 he had a one-man show
at the civic gallery of Vezzano Ligure, which also organised the publication of the book “Opera incisa 1973-87”. In 1992 he displayed in Saudi Arabia: at the General Italian Consulate in Gedda and the Italian Embassy of Riad.
During his artistic career, Musante has also devoted himself to the illustration of several books of stories and fairy tales. Since 1971 he has had over 300 one-man shows in Italy and in other Countries.
