LERICI AND ITS HISTORY
Pearl of the Gulf of Poets, Lerici has been portrayed, described and admired by great artists of all eras and has rightfully entered Italian and foreign culture. Dante Alighieri mentions it in the Purgatory, the poets of the Gran Tour Byron, Shelley, his wife Mary, David Lawrence, Henry James, Virginia Woolf all stayed and lived there and were inspired by it. The symbol of the town is the Castle of San Giorgio, which like a giant dominates and protects the Gulf of Lerici from the top of the rocky promontory. Thanks to its structure and its imposing size, it creates a unique contrast with the multicoloured houses, typical of Liguria, which overlook and cluster around it. It is considered one of the most beautiful in Liguria, a superb example of military architecture.
